Built on Linphone

Almost everything in ZuluTalk is Linphone. The calling engine (the Linphone SDK), the app itself and its translations were created by Belledonne Communications and the Linphone community, and published as free software under the GNU GPLv3.

We started from Linphone for Android 6.2.8, gave it a new name and simpler defaults, and added a few fixes. Every change we made is listed on GitHub. If you want the original, get Linphone from Belledonne. It's free too.

ZuluTalk is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed or supported by Belledonne Communications. See full credits.

What you get

From Linphone

Clear voice and video

HD voice with the Opus and G.722 codecs, and video calls with H.264 and VP8.

From Linphone

Encrypted calls

SIP over TLS with SRTP or ZRTP media encryption, when your provider supports it.

From Linphone

Works with standard SIP

Use a SIP account from any provider or your own server. Accounts can be set up from a single provisioning link.

Added in ZuluTalk

Video on mobile data

On mobile data and slow networks, video automatically switches to a lower resolution and bitrate so it doesn't freeze.

Added in ZuluTalk

Foldable phones

Call video rescales correctly when you fold or unfold your phone during a call.

Added in ZuluTalk

Calls first

Opens on the dial pad. Chat, meetings and recording are hidden, video calls use the speaker, and it rings in the background.

What you need to know

  • ZuluTalk is software, not a phone service. It does not come with a phone number or a calling plan. You connect it to a SIP account from a provider you choose, or to your own server.
  • Do not rely on ZuluTalk for emergency calls. Use your phone's normal dialler and mobile network.
  • Some countries restrict or license internet calling. You are responsible for using ZuluTalk in line with the law where you are.
  • ZuluTalk is free to use, copy, change and share under the GNU GPLv3, and comes with no warranty.
